Find the Next Monday (or Any Weekday) in Excel

By ExcelReady Team·Updated November 2, 2026·6 min read

The short answer

To find the next Monday after a date in A2, use =A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2,2). WEEKDAY with return type 2 numbers Monday as 1 and Sunday as 7, so the formula always lands on the following Monday, even when A2 is a Monday. For Monday on or after the date, use =A2+MOD(1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7).

Key takeaways

  • =A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2,2) returns the next Monday strictly after the date in A2.
  • =A2+MOD(1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7) returns the same date if it is already a Monday.
  • For any weekday, use =A2+MOD(d-1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1, where d is 1 for Monday up to 7 for Sunday.
  • WORKDAY.INTL(A2,1,"0111111") also finds the next Monday by treating every other day as a weekend.
  • If the result shows as a number like 46335, format the cell as a date.

To find the next Monday date in Excel, add 8 to the date and subtract its weekday number: =A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2,2). The same idea, with MOD, finds the next Friday or any other day of the week. This guide is for anyone scheduling shipments, reviews, payroll or meetings that always fall on a set weekday, and it covers the previous Monday and the first Monday of a month too.

How to find the next Monday after a date#

Use WEEKDAY with return type 2, which numbers the days from Monday = 1 to Sunday = 7. If the date is in A2, type:

Excel formula
=A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2,2)
Date in A2WEEKDAY(A2,2)Days added (8 − weekday)Next Monday
Mon 2 Nov 202617Mon 9 Nov 2026
Wed 4 Nov 202635Mon 9 Nov 2026
Fri 6 Nov 202653Mon 9 Nov 2026
Sun 8 Nov 202671Mon 9 Nov 2026
Thu 31 Dec 202644Mon 4 Jan 2027

This works because Excel stores dates as whole numbers, one per day, so adding 5 to a date moves it 5 days forward. From any day, 8 minus its weekday number is exactly the number of days left until the next Monday. A Monday gets 7 days added, so the result is always after the start date, never the same day.

If you see a number like 46335 instead of a date, the formula is fine: the cell just needs a date format (Home > Number Format > Short Date). The guide to adding days, months and years explains how date arithmetic works.

Next Monday, or the same day if it is already Monday#

Sometimes a Monday should stay where it is, for example when a task can start the same day. Use MOD to add 0 days for a Monday:

Excel formula
=A2+MOD(1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)

For Mon 2 Nov 2026, 1-1 is 0, so the result is the same date. For Wed 4 Nov 2026, 1-3 is −2, and MOD(−2,7) is 5, so the result is Mon 9 Nov 2026. MOD keeps the answer between 0 and 6, which is why negative numbers turn into the right count of days.

How to find the next Friday or any weekday#

Swap the day number into a general formula. With return type 2, Monday is 1, Tuesday 2, Wednesday 3, Thursday 4, Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7. For the next day d strictly after A2:

Excel formula
=A2+MOD(d-1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1

For the next Friday (d = 5):

Excel formula
=A2+MOD(4-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1

From Wed 4 Nov 2026, this returns Fri 6 Nov 2026. From Fri 6 Nov it returns Fri 13 Nov, the following week. For a version you can change without editing the formula, put the day number in a cell, such as E1, and use =A2+MOD(E1-1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1. The lesson on EDATE, EOMONTH and WEEKDAY lets you practise WEEKDAY's return types.

How to find the next weekday with WORKDAY.INTL#

WORKDAY.INTL (Excel 2010 and later) can treat every day except Monday as a weekend, so "the next working day" becomes "the next Monday":

Excel formula
=WORKDAY.INTL(A2,1,"0111111")

The seven-character text describes Monday to Sunday: 0 is a working day and 1 is a weekend day. Here only Monday is a working day, so the formula returns the next Monday after A2: Mon 9 Nov 2026 from Wed 4 Nov. For the next Friday, use "1111011".

A bonus of this method is the optional holidays argument. =WORKDAY.INTL(A2,1,"0111111",H2:H5) skips a Monday that appears in the holiday list in H2:H5 and returns the Monday after. For ordinary working days (Monday to Friday), the simpler WORKDAY does the job: =WORKDAY(A2,1) gives the next working day. The WORKDAY function guide covers it, and the due date formulas guide shows both in deadlines.

How to find the previous Monday (start of the week)#

To go back to the Monday of the same week, use return type 3, which numbers Monday as 0 and Sunday as 6:

Excel formula
=A2-WEEKDAY(A2,3)

For Wed 4 Nov 2026, WEEKDAY returns 2, so the result is Mon 2 Nov 2026. A Monday returns itself. This is the formula for "week starting" columns in weekly reports and timesheets.

Next Monday from today, and the first Monday of a month#

To find next Monday from today's date, replace A2 with TODAY():

Excel formula
=TODAY()+8-WEEKDAY(TODAY(),2)

The result changes every day. If you need to keep the date, copy the cell and paste it as a value.

For the first Monday of a month, start from the 1st and use the "on or after" version:

Excel formula
=DATE(2026,12,1)+MOD(1-WEEKDAY(DATE(2026,12,1),2),7)

December 1, 2026 is a Tuesday, so the result is Mon 7 Dec 2026. To count down to dates like these, see days until a deadline.

Common mistakes with next weekday formulas#

These slips cause most wrong dates:

  1. Leaving out the return type. WEEKDAY(A2) uses Sunday = 1 to Saturday = 7, so =A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2) finds the next Sunday, not Monday. Always write the 2.
  2. Dates stored as text. A date typed as text, such as one imported from another system, gives #VALUE!. Convert it with DATEVALUE or Text to Columns first.
  3. Strictly after vs on or after. Decide whether a Monday should stay the same or move a week, then pick the matching formula.
  4. A number instead of a date. Format the result cell as a date.
  5. Checking the result by eye. Add a day name next to it with =TEXT(B2,"dddd") to confirm it really is a Monday; see how to get the day name from a date.

Practise it#

Try the exercise on this page: it finds a shipping Monday with WEEKDAY. Then practise WEEKDAY, EDATE and EOMONTH in a live spreadsheet, and practise NETWORKDAYS and WORKDAY to skip weekends and holidays in real deadlines.

Try it yourself

This is a live spreadsheet. Type the formula in the green cell and press Enter.

Each order is shipped on the next Monday after it is received. In C2, use WEEKDAY with return type 2 to find the next Monday after the date in B2.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the next Monday from a date in Excel?

+

Use =A2+8-WEEKDAY(A2,2). For Wednesday 4 November 2026 it returns Monday 9 November 2026. If A2 is a Monday, it returns the Monday a week later.

How do I get next Monday from today's date?

+

Replace A2 with TODAY(): =TODAY()+8-WEEKDAY(TODAY(),2). The result changes every day, so copy and paste it as a value if you need to keep it.

How do I find the next Friday in Excel?

+

Use =A2+MOD(4-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1. Friday is day 5 with return type 2, so the general formula =A2+MOD(d-1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1 becomes MOD(5-1-WEEKDAY(A2,2),7)+1.

How do I find the Monday of the current week?

+

Use =A2-WEEKDAY(A2,3). Return type 3 numbers Monday as 0 and Sunday as 6, so subtracting it takes you back to the Monday on or before the date.

Why does my next Monday formula show a number?

+

Excel stores dates as numbers, and the result cell kept the General format. Format the cell as a date with Home > Number Format > Short Date.

Due Date Formulas in Excel: Days, Workdays, Months

The due date formula in Excel depends on your terms. For a set number of calendar days, add them: =B2+30. To count only working days and skip holidays, use =WORKDAY(B2,10,holidays). For a due date a set number of months later, use =EDATE(B2,1). Then compare the due date with TODAY() to show days left or flag overdue items.
