Is There a Date Picker in Excel? Faster Ways to Enter Dates

By ExcelReady Team·Updated November 3, 2026·5 min read

The short answer

Most versions of desktop Excel have no built-in date picker (a calendar that pops up when you click a cell). The fastest alternatives are Ctrl+; for today's date (Mac: Control+;), typing short dates like 15/3, dragging the fill handle for a series, and data validation that only accepts dates. Add-ins can add a calendar if you really need one.

Key takeaways

  • Most desktop versions of Excel don't show a calendar pop-up when you click a cell.
  • Ctrl+; (Mac: Control+;) types today's date as a fixed value; =TODAY() updates every day.
  • Type a short date like 15/3 or 15 Mar and Excel adds the current year.
  • Data validation with Allow: Date stops wrong or text dates before they get in.
  • A drop-down list of dates gives users a picker-like choice without any add-in.

  8. Practise it

Most versions of desktop Excel have no date picker: clicking a cell doesn't open a calendar. But you rarely need one. A shortcut, a short typed date, the fill handle or a date drop-down usually gets the date in faster than clicking through a calendar, and data validation stops wrong dates. This guide is for anyone who enters dates into trackers, logs and forms and wants it quick and accurate.

Does Excel have a date picker?#

Not in most cases. Desktop Excel for Windows and Mac doesn't normally show a calendar when you click a cell. Microsoft adds features to Microsoft 365 over time, so check your own version, but the methods below work in every version.

There are three ways people get a real calendar:

  • Office add-ins. Go to Home > Add-ins (or Insert > Get Add-ins) and search for a date picker. Many workplaces restrict add-ins, so check with your IT team first.
  • The old Date and Time Picker control. This ActiveX control only works in some 32-bit Windows installs. It isn't available in 64-bit Office or on a Mac, so files that use it break for many people.
  • Microsoft Forms. A form's Date question shows a calendar, and the responses can be collected in an Excel sheet. That suits sign-ups and requests rather than editing a sheet directly.

For most work, the faster options below are better than any calendar.

Type today's date with Ctrl+;#

Press Ctrl+; on Windows or Control+; on a Mac to type today's date into the selected cell. The date is a fixed value, so it never changes. That's what you want for logs, invoices and "date received" columns.

If you want a date that always shows the current day, use the formula =TODAY() instead. It updates every time the file recalculates, which suits "days overdue" calculations but not records. The TODAY function guide and the guide to the TODAY function explain the difference, and the current date shortcut guide adds the time shortcut too.

Type short dates and let Excel fill the year#

Excel recognises many short forms, so you rarely need to type the whole date. With UK-style settings (day first):

You typeExcel stores (if the year is 2026)
15/315 March 2026
15-315 March 2026
15 Mar15 March 2026
15/3/2715 March 2027

With US-style settings (month first), type 3/15 instead. Excel follows your computer's regional settings (Windows: Region settings; Mac: Language & Region). That's why the same file can read 03/04 as 3 April on one computer and March 4 on another.

Two-digit years follow a cut-off. By default in Windows, 00 to 29 mean 2000 to 2029, and 30 to 99 mean 1930 to 1999. Type four digits when it matters.

To check that Excel understood a date, look at the alignment. Real dates sit on the right of the cell, like numbers. Text sits on the left.

Fill a series of dates with the fill handle#

To fill many dates at once, type the first date and drag the fill handle (the small square at the bottom-right of the cell) down or across. Excel adds one day per cell.

After you drag, click the Auto Fill Options button that appears to choose:

  • Fill Days: every day.
  • Fill Weekdays: Monday to Friday only.
  • Fill Months: the same day each month.
  • Fill Years: the same date each year.

For a fixed step, such as every 7 days, type the first two dates (for example 2 Nov and 9 Nov), select both and drag. Or use Home > Fill > Series and set a step value. To copy the same date down instead of a series, select the range and press Ctrl+D (Mac: ⌘D).

Only allow dates with data validation#

Data validation doesn't add a calendar, but it stops bad dates before they get into your sheet.

  1. Select the date column, for example B2:B200.
  2. Go to Data > Data Validation.
  3. Under Allow, choose Date.
  4. Choose between and enter a start and end date, such as 1/1/2026 and 31/12/2026.
  5. On the Input Message tab, add a tip such as "Enter a date as dd/mm/yyyy".
  6. Click OK.

Now Excel rejects text like "next Tuesday" and dates outside the range. You can use formulas for the limits too, such as =TODAY() as the end date to block future dates. The guide to data validation rules covers more options.

Make a drop-down list of dates#

A drop-down list is the closest you get to a picker without add-ins. It works well when users choose from a short set of dates, such as the next ten working days or the Mondays of a quarter.

  1. Type or generate the dates in a helper column, for example H2:H11. For the next 10 working days, put =WORKDAY(TODAY(),1) in H2 and =WORKDAY(H2,1) in H3, then fill H3 down to H11.
  2. Format that column as dates.
  3. Select the input cells and go to Data > Data Validation.
  4. Choose Allow: List and set the source to =$H$2:$H$11.

Users now pick a date from the arrow next to the cell. Because the list is built from formulas with TODAY, it moves forward each day, so if you need fixed dates, type them instead. See how to create a drop-down list for the full steps.

Make dates display the way you want#

The way a date looks is its format, not its value. Press Ctrl+1 (Mac: ⌘1), choose Date or Custom, and pick a format such as dd/mm/yyyy or d mmm yyyy. The stored date stays the same.

If dates show as numbers like 46342, the cell has a General format: apply a date format and they come back. If dates won't change format at all, they're probably text. The guide to changing the date format shows how to convert them, and the DATE function helps when the parts are in separate columns:

Excel formula
=DATE(A2,B2,C2)

With 2026, 11 and 16 in A2:C2, this returns 16 November 2026 as a real date.

Practise it#

Fast date entry starts with knowing that every date is a number underneath. Practise how Excel stores dates with DATE, YEAR, MONTH and DAY, then practise date and number formatting so your dates always display the way you want. Both lessons run in a live spreadsheet and check each step as you type.

Try it yourself

This is a live spreadsheet. Type the formula in the green cell and press Enter.

A form exported the year, month and day in separate columns. Click D2 and turn them into one real date with =DATE(A2,B2,C2), then press Enter.

Tip: DATE always takes the year first, then the month, then the day.

Frequently asked questions

Does Excel have a date picker?

+

Most versions of desktop Excel don't have a built-in calendar pop-up for worksheet cells. You can enter dates quickly with shortcuts, short typed dates, AutoFill and data validation, or add a calendar with an Office add-in.

How do I add a calendar drop-down in Excel?

+

Without code, the closest option is a data validation drop-down list that points at a range of dates. For a real calendar, look for a date picker in the Office Add-ins store, if your organisation allows add-ins.

What is the shortcut to insert a date in Excel?

+

Press Ctrl+; on Windows or Control+; on a Mac to type today's date into the cell as a fixed value. Use =TODAY() instead if you want a date that updates every day.

Why is the Date and Time Picker control missing in Excel?

+

The old Microsoft Date and Time Picker is an ActiveX control that only works in some 32-bit Windows installs. It isn't available in 64-bit Office or on a Mac, so most people can't use it.

How do I stop people typing wrong dates in Excel?

+

Select the cells, go to Data > Data Validation, choose Allow: Date and set a start and end date. Excel then rejects text and dates outside that range, and you can add an input message showing the format to use.

Data Validation Rules in Excel: Limit What Users Can Enter

Select the cells, go to Data > Data Validation, and choose what to allow: a whole number, decimal, list, date, time, text length or a custom formula. Set the limits, add an input message and an error alert, and click OK. Excel then rejects typed entries that break the rule. Custom rules use any formula that returns TRUE for valid entries.
